Durham IV

I'm pleased to announce that registration for the annual Durham Union
IV will open on Saturday 1st September.

The competition itself will be held on Saturday 3rd November 2007
aspart of the annual Doxbridge Worlds warm-up. To those already in the
North East at the Newcastle IV the day before, Durham is only a short
train journey.
Like last year, we'll be running closed motions and 4 prelim rounds
breaking to semis. We have the ESU's 'Man from Melbourne', Andrew
Fitch as CA. Fitch was 6th best speaker at Worlds 2005 and a Grand
Finalist at Australs the same year.

The overall team cap is 60, but there's no limit on teams per
institution. The N-1 judging rule applies to all IONA institutions.
The cost of registration is £40 per team. Judges are free. Places will
be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Registration will
close at 12.30pm on the Saturday; teams who have not paid by this time
will not be able to compete.

After the Final in the Chamber, we will move down to 24 North Bailey
Club for the famed Durham free social (yakka, anyone?). Saturday night
crash will be in 24NBC bar and reading room; I'd recommend that you
contact any friends in Durham in advance to see if they have a spare
bed/ sofa/ hammock for the night.

To register, please email durhamdebate@gmail.com. Following reg,
cheques payable to The Durham Union Society should be sent to the
address below. We can also accept electronic transfers, details on
request.

Leiden
Hello everybody,

The Leiden University Debating Society 'De Leidsche Beck' is proud to
announce the Leiden Open 2007.
This BP-debating competition will be held on Friday 26th and Saturday
27th October 2007 at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. The
competition will consist of 5 preliminary rounds (2 on Friday evening,
3 on Saturday), breaking to semi-finals. Our CA Alex Ward and DCA
Leela Koenig will reside over a very experienced judging pool. Teamcap
is set at 40 teams.

We plan to bring some of the best debaters from the continental and
the Irish/English circuit together in Leiden. The city is located near
Amsterdam Airport, a hub for lowcost carriers all over Europe. Crash
will be provided to all international participants. Crash accomodation
for Thursday and Sunday is available on a first come, first served
basis for those of you who want to stay a bit longer.

Registration is open now and the participation fee will be 50 euros
per team, and 15 euro per judge. Composite teams are allowed and even
encouraged, but it would be very much appreciated if societies will
send (good) judges along.

The Leiden Open 2007 will have great debating and good parties in one
of the prettiest cities of Holland, and it provides an excellent
opportunity for both established and new debaters to come to The
Netherlands and experience just how much fun international debating
tournaments can be.

Oxford
Oxford may be under threat of flood, but fear not, for it gives us
great pleasure to announce that we are ready to begin registration
for the Oxford IV 2007.

International Package registration will open at 00:01 hrs BST on
Wednesday, August 1, 2007. Registration for domestic teams will open
at 00:01 hrs BST on Saturday, September 1st.

International teams who wish to attend the Oxford IV can register
either with the International Package or with the IONA (domestic)
package. However, we do strongly recommend the International Package
for international teams. Although it is £30 more, among its benefits
are this it does guarantee you, in addition to everything provided
by the IONA package:

* Exemption from the n-1 rule.
* A guaranteed extra night of crash on Thursday.
* Free entrance to the historic Oxford Union Thursday night debate,
"This house looks forward to seeing a democrat in the White House".
This debate will feature Tom DeLay and Al Sharpton, amongst others,
and is set to be the Union's most high-profile debate in years.
* A cocktail party on Thursday night with free cocktails.
* A free walking tour of historic Oxford, which is celebrating the
1000th year of its foundation.

The team cap is 3 teams per institution. We would like to draw the
attention of all Irish institutions to our website, which explains
the position of the Convenors with regard to Irish institutions.
